Handoff MCP v0.28–0.30 — One Project, Any Agent: Codex CLI Integration
Claude Code or Codex CLI — same tasks, same plans, same memory. Delegate parts of your development loop to Codex without the project context resetting.
Handoff MCP v0.28 through v0.30 are out. The theme is interoperability between AI agents.
Same Project, Regardless of Agent
AI-assisted development increasingly involves switching between multiple agents — Claude Code for one task, Codex CLI for another. But your project's plans, task state, and accumulated knowledge tend to stay locked inside each agent's session.
Start work in Codex, and the tasks you were tracking in Claude Code are invisible. Plans and lessons learned — gone. If switching agents resets your project, the benefit of choosing the right tool for each job is wiped out.
Automatic Memory Injection (v0.28)
v0.28 adds a memory auto-injection hook for Codex CLI. At the start of each Codex turn, relevant project memories stored in Handoff MCP are automatically injected into the agent's context.
Claude Code already had this via the handoff-mcp-hooks plugin. Now both agents draw from the same pool. Past decisions ("use API v2 for this endpoint") and known pitfalls ("this test is flaky in CI") carry over regardless of which agent you use.
This release also introduces the plugin packaging foundation, making it possible to distribute skills and hooks as a single installable package.
Native Development Loop on Codex (v0.29)
v0.29 adds a dedicated Task Loop plugin for Codex. Install handoff-task-loop-codex and invoke $handoff-session-loop to run the implement → test → review cycle entirely within Codex agents.
The same task consumption mechanism behind Claude Code's /session-loop now works on Codex. Task state (in_progress, done, review) is shared through .handoff/, so progress is tracked in one place regardless of which agent does the work.
The write-approval requirement for MCP tool calls is documented, ensuring safety during non-interactive execution.
Partial Delegation from session-loop (v0.30)
v0.30 adds an adapter that lets individual agent calls within Claude Code's /session-loop workflow be routed through Codex CLI.
For example, you could run the implementation phase with a Claude subagent and delegate the testing phase to Codex. The default remains Claude subagents, so existing workflows are unaffected.
